Ber Months, Elder Teh and The New Training Program

Date: August 30, 2011
Area: Cauayan City Branch 2 - Assistant to the President
Companion: Elder Katao

Do you know what a BER month is? I didn't until I got out here. In America you have people that can't believe there is Christmas music playing on the radio after Halloween. September 1st marks the beginning of BER months, SeptemBER, OctoBER, NovemBER, DecemBER, and for many the start of the Christmas Season.

Last year around this time Imelda, one of the people who help here, was trying to put the Christmas pillows up in the mission home (The Carlos's explained how Halloween has to come and go first). Hope you all have the best BER months you have ever had!

I think President is also excited for BER months for some reason. He keeps saying things like 4 days 8 hours 11 minutes.

Saturday and Sunday was suppose to be District Conference here in Cauayan, but they called it off due to weather. A new training program for trainers and trainees came out. We went around the mission last week to introduce everyone to it. One thing that is included is an extra hour of companion study each day, but P-day and weekly planning days (those days are just 1 hour). When the 12 weeks are over, you go back to the 1 hour companionship study.

President started each day with the scripture, "Seek not to declare my word but first seek to obtain my word, then shall your tongue be loosed." I was blessed with the best trainer in the church and am forever grateful for him.

Elder Ardern and Elder Teh [Elder Tey is Area President and Elder Ardern is a councilor] were running a little late for their flight back to Manila. One of the people who came with them drove us back up to Tuguegarao. We ate a quick lunch after their meeting with District and Stake Presidencies and got in the car. Elder Teh explained how we (Elder Katoa and myself), like the people of Ammon, had made a covenant not to go over a certain speed limit when driving a mission vehicle. But the guy who would be driving us back had not made that covenant, and was an experienced Manila driver (that is crazy stuff in Manila), so that was the reason for him driving. We wizzed out of the parking lot and onto the highway and crash! We hit a tricy. Elder Teh gets out of the car, goes over to the tricy driver and inspects the tricy. They don't find any damage and Elder Teh asked if he was OK? He said this with a smile on his face and away we went. (haha). The conversations were amazing.

One of Sister Pua's kids passed away several years back. This is something that she still struggles with, and something the Gospel provides answers to. "Where do I come from?" "Why am I here?" "Where do I go after I die?" At first she was showing only small signs of interest after teaching her once and coming back several times to schedule an appointment with the whole family, including dad.

We were persistent and one evening we got them. Brother Pua had just got home from work with his wife as we were sitting on the door step with other members of their family. We had President Uy, our branch president with us. President Uy and Elder Katoa shared personal stories of forever families made possible through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Their kids and some nieces/cousins joined us. They warmed up in that lesson and we have had several other return appointments afterward. They are doing so far so good. We have taught small portions at a time so they can understand, and we can be quicker for Kevin and Benson who have friends to text. We have taught them several times and hope they continue to progress. We love them.

The Gamit Family continue to be examples of the believers. President Carlos once shared with us the story of the turkey's and we have shared that with the Gamit family. Brother Gamit in particular loves that story. He has shared it with the family members of theirs that are investigating. Basically the turkey's went to flying school to learn to fly, and when class was done they all walked home. Brother Gamit always advises that we don't be like the turkeys.

Elder Katoa says hi to you all, in 5 months he may want a referral from you.

Have a great week!!!! Love you all so much.

This is the Church of Jesus Christ. It was restored to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith and is being lead today by a living Prophet, Thomas S. Monson. The Book of Mormon is the word of God and a man will get nearer to God by reading it and abiding it's precepts. Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer and the only way to salvation. He lives and stands at the head of this great latter-day work.
