"And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just, yea, it had had a more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or ANYTHING else, which had happened unto them, therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God."

This is true. We watched the Restoration video with Jocelyn and Poraldo yesterday. When the movie ended, one of their neighbors came by. She came in, sat down and immediately Jocelyn started telling her she needs to meet with the missionaries. This sister started using all the usual excuses and Jocelyn shot them all down. She said this is truth, she can FEEL it's true. She explained feelings of joy and peace.

She said her and Poraldo use to always fight, but no more. She explained to her neighbor she needed to listen to our message, and pray to God if it's not true. At the end of this conversation this sister said,"you're right." She agreed to attend with us in our next visit to the Jocelyn and Poraldo's house.

I am blown away by the strong testimony of Jocelyn and Poraldo. They have born that testimony to us and to their friends and neighbors on many occasions. They want to share this message with everyone, and they are not even members yet. When they share, they are confident in blessings the gospel will bring into the lives of those who will "try the virtue of the word of God." They are still waiting for their papers to arrive from Manila so they can get married then baptized.

Growing up, I loved to watch, "A Muppet's Christmas Carol." The story of Mr. BaaaaHumbug, Ebenizer Scrooge. He is visited by 3 ghosts, Christmas past, present and future and as a result of their visits he decides to change his life. President Monson has said he believes this is an inspired story. He often quotes this saying of Mr. Scrooge, "I am not the man I was."

This is what the word is doing to me, and what it is doing throughout the world to people who will "try the virtue of the word of God." Why does the word have such a powerful effect? This Thursday we had a leadership training meeting in Cauayan. The subject was the role of the Holy Ghost in conversion.

If you haven't found that talk by Elder Holland titled "The Divine Companionship" you need to find it and read it. In Chapter 33 of 2nd Nephi, verse 1 it says "...when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it UNTO the hearts of the children of men." We as missionaries are nobodies. As President Carlos said we are the vehicle for the Holy Ghost to carry the word unto the hearts of children of men. Elder Bednar makes it clear that in this scripture, it says UNTO not INTO.

In verse 2 it says "there are many that harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit, that it hath no place in them." It is up to each of us to let the Spirit INTO our hearts. President Carlos said each of us need to do our best to qualify for the Spirit and teach by the Spirit, and then when we have done that, if they don't accept, we didn't fail, they did.

I love that Marcelis Jones quote where he said that he realized that he hasn't been using the gift of the Holy Ghost as "well as I should." I believe we can always be striving to understand more about the Holy Ghost and using it more in our lives.
Tuesday I taught my first district meeting. The members of the district are Elder Caamic, Elder Unico, Elder Farley, Elders Murphy and Miller (Our Zone Leaders) and Sisters Dalisay and Avencenia (from my last district).

Following district meeting we had splits with the Zone Leaders. I went to Roxas (not Rocksess) and worked with Elder Miller. I learned so much. We had tocinio for dinner (a food idea they got from us when we were in Burgos. It was a favorite of Elders Ward, Me, Hanks, and Pangan).

Have a great week in Orem, Utah. I have a feeling there's a 5 point buck, 30 inch spread in the Barker's orchard. Maybe you could chase it onto 8th East, Rachel could hit it, and then you could tag it. Cheer the Cougars on to victory.

To end, I know the true word of God is more powerful than the sword or ANYTHING else, when it is carried by the power of the Spirit. The word of God can change us if we will let it INTO our hearts. It is our choice.

"Hold to the rod, the iron rod, tis strong and bright and true. The iron rod is the Word of God, twill safely guide us through."

--Elder Hale
