He called from the airport!

Date: August 12, 2008
Area: En route to Belem
Companion: A new, probably Brazilian one:)

Dear family and friends,

I just want to let you all know that Elder Lunt called unexpectedly today from the airport in Brasilia!

I was so excited to hear his voice when I answered the phone, at first I thought I was dreaming! Sometime in the conversation I asked him if he was allowed to be calling, because at first he thought he wasn't going to be able to. He said that he asked President Woodward about it before they left, and his answer was simply, "I don't know." And he left it at that. He felt like Pres. Woodward was leaving it up to each elder to decide for himself, so he and Elder Williams bought a calling card together and shared it. Elder Williams really felt like he needed to talk to his dad; he felt strongly that his dad really needed him today. So he used the card first, and then Tyler used the card to call us.

It was very early in the morning when the phone rang, and I was groggy for the first few seconds, but here is what we talked about...

Tyler is so very happy, and bursting with excitement! He said some things in Portuguese, and it was amazing. He told us to ask him any question, and he answered it in Portuguese! For those of you who know him very well, you know what a hilarious imitator he is, and the many accents he's capable of. I truly think that this ability has helped him learn a new language. He has been blessed with the gift of tongues--I'm certain of it. He said that his teacher told him that she believed he would be fluent less than two months from now. Wow!

He also said that his favorite food is rice and beans. Which is a very good thing, because that's exactly what he's been eating every single day:) Papa Lunt, I bet you're happy he loves rice and beans! It will put hair on his chest!

Tyler said that every time he would tell someone he was going to Belem, they would look amazed and say things like, "Oh, Belem is like another planet." I asked him what they meant by that, and he said just that it's so hot, and so different. We'll all find out what that means really soon, I'm sure.

He said that he loved the CTM so much, but that he is so ready to get out there and work in Belem. He also said that the farewell last night at the CTM was similar to the one at home, with similar feelings and excitement. He said they had a devotional, and someone told a story about a little girl and her father. The father wanted the little girl to jump into a deep pool, but she was afraid. He told her it would be alright, and that she would be okay in the water. Tyler said he felt comforted to know that he is going to be okay, like that little girl jumping into the pool. He has such strong faith, and such enthusiasm for what he is about to do!

He mentioned how grateful he is for all of the wonderful letters everyone is sending. As he's mentioned before in his emails, he feels stressed that he can't answer everyone. I told him that his family and friends understand that he is extremely busy and has to follow mission rules. He is only able to write letters on his p-day. It's also his only laundry (which will soon consist of a large tub of water and soap, and stomping in it with his bare feet and hanging everything on a line to dry), shopping, errands, cleaning, etc. day of the week. He appreciates and loves you all SO MUCH!! Thank you for being so supportive and loving, and for writing to him. He absolutely loves and thrives on his letters from you.

He was excited to be able to talk to Leah, and he said "Holy cow, you're DATING!!!" That said it all. He can't imagine her dating and growing up.

He did sound tired, because he'd only gotten two hours of sleep last night. I'm sure he and his district had another sleepover with their mattresses in the hallway. :)

He sends his love to all of you! Thank you again...you are all so wonderful. I'll keep you posted as soon as I hear anything.

With love,
Meisje
