Transfers, Hippos and patience
Date: August 20, 2007
Area: Jinja Companion: Elder Wright
The weeks are going fast. Transfers were announced Saturday. I'm staying here in Jinja and so is my companion. We're getting a new Elder in our house though. Elder Ray. He's actually from Eagle, ID. He came just 6 weeks before I did. That means that he'll be home 6 weeks before me. I told him he needs to pick me up at the airport, and have a bunch of girls ready for me. We're told as missionaries that the best way to find investigators is through referrals from members. So if I take that principle home with me, I'll need to find my wife through referrals, not street contacting. It's a good concept. I can see the blessings coming into my life already. Even our mission President married the sister of one of the Elders he served with. Yep, blessings will come...
We had fun scaring Elders this week. I live with the Zone Leaders, so they have to go on exchanges with the other District Leaders in the zone. They decided to do all the exchanges for this transfer in one week. So a few nights in a row we had a new Elder sleeping at our house. So what we did was make it like the house was being robbed. The new Elder coming would unlock the door to a very dark house, in a very dark yard. As he walked in looking for the light, I slammed an old 4 ft. flourescent bulb on the ground (they explode) and my companion dropped all the pots in the kitchen while kicking the back door. The one Elder, Lumbala, from D.R.C. ran back into the matooke plantation behind our house, and he told as he knelt and prayed he said, "Lord, thy will be done." He's a good guy. And he definitely knows how to take a joke. He went back to Bugembe and did the same thing to the Elders he was staying with the next night.
Today. P-Day, we're going to go and try and find some fishing gear. We want to catch some fish in the Nile and cook them ourselves. We're teaching an old man who was telling us the good places to go. He told us some cool stories about his past experiences on the river. He used to kill hippos... With a bow and arrow. A bow and arrow that he made. This guy is old school. He actually has a good understanding of the restoration, but of course the trick is getting people to act upon that spirit and come to church! Even that lady that has been reading the Book of Mormon like crazy still hasn't come. If there's anything you learn as a missionary, it's patience.
Another idea for Christmas. LDSBAND.COM. Ugandans would love those things! There's this one member who has the pink glow in the dark CTR one. He can't get over it. I'm not sure where he got it though. I think from the missionary couple. But he loves it, pink or not. I'm actually going to e-mail the company and see if they'd be willing to donate any.
Have a good week.
