Sunday surprises, good impressions, service

Date: October 15, 2007
Area: Jinja
Companion: Elder Krueger

Sunday was a good day. We had an investigator come to church named Ramadan, which [probably] says he was born Muslim. But he's progressing. Then Ronald and David completely surprised us when they walked in. They live with a pastor of another church! They take care of his house and he only comes on the weekends when he preaches in Jinja. I guess he's some white guy from I don't know where. I haven't met him. It was a little awkward finding that out as I sat in his house teaching the guys that live there and take care of his house. He'll probably be a little mad when he finds copies of the Book of Mormon laying around. It's cool though...Anyways, we also had this guy Nathan show up. He also stays in Kimaka which is about a 30-40 minute walk. He said we contacted him on the street, which of course we can't remember. We meet so many people every day. But he came. And then, to top everything off, our family came! Patrick (father), Calmel (mother), Ruth (12), Ronald (10), and Patricia (7). We've taught them twice now and of course I had to hook them up with Book of Mormon Stories. I can see them progressing very fast. It was Patrick's third Sunday, and the kids second. But it was Calmel's first. I can tell she's going to be the one we'll have to really focus on. It doesn't help that our Relief Society is kind of weak here. The President is a less-active. Well at this point maybe I should say in-active.

My companion is still cool. I don't look forward to the day that I get transferred out of this house. I was telling Elder Krueger that he's a little spoiled having his mission so nice his first transfer. But who knows, maybe it'll stay this nice for him the rest of his mission.

We were caught in some rain this week. We went to sit down and were getting kind of bored. We were under a small hut in Amber Court where they sell beverages. We decided to teach the guy serving us and found out that he had been coming to the church about a year ago, but went and lived in the village for some time and when he came back just kind of forgot about the church. So we were able to remind him. Then another man came and sat next to us and was very interested in us. He told us that he had been in the States just last year on a business trip through the Northwest. He said that he went through Salt Lake City and saw all of our headquarters. He ended up being the head administrator for the YMCA of Uganda in the Jinja district, which is where we just had our district conference a few months ago. So it seems that our church had been making some good impressions in his eyes and we were able to find out where he stays and we're hoping to follow up with that. That would be a powerful guy to convert.

We went and did a service project for Isaac, one of our progressing investigators with a baptismal date. His Mom is some type of politician and so he inherited a bigger house with a lot of old electrical things laying around. I told him we would come and clean it all up for him if he wanted. A few days later he reminded me of the offer, saying he wanted to take us up on it. I got the other Elders together and we went and cleaned the place up and taped some nice pictures on his walls. Jesus, First Vision, etc. Isaac is truly going through a change of heart right now. He should be baptized on the 28th. It will be a nice day because even the sisters are going to be baptizing one of their investigators, James, the same day. The work is progressing.

Have a great week!
