Baptism and polygamy, social differences
Date: October 29, 2007
Area: Jinja Companion: Elder Krueger
Isaac was baptized this Sunday. Almost didn't happen though. We found just on Wednesday that his father was a polygamist. That means he had to write a letter and get approved by the first presidency that he could be baptized. So we had him write the letter, and it was perfect! He got approved within 24 hours, was interviewed by the mission president's councilor, passed, and was baptized. It worked out nice. Then there was James, the sister’s investigator. I interviewed him Friday. Within the first thirty seconds I found out that he also had a father who was a polygamist. So immediately I had him write a letter. And again he was approved within 24 hours and was re-interviewed Saturday about polygamy and passed. So James and Isaac were both baptized on Sunday. And everyone learned to not procrastinate the question, "Was, or is your father a polygamist?" It was close.
Isaac is a socially awkward person. I'm starting to realize that. He came to a big service project Saturday and didn't do anything at all. I was wondering why he even came. But he seems to be very committed to the church. The other night I was praying and thanking God for the success we were able to have with him and I saw an image of Isaac standing off in the distance looking back over his shoulder at me with a smirk of appreciation. It made me feel good. Like even though we may be social polars, we're still able to have a feeling of charity for each other.
I just found something on Deseret book website that makes me want to wipe everything clean off my Christmas list and replace it with this. It's "On Sacred Ground: Reflections on Joseph Smith" collection by Truman G. Madsen. At least Vol. 1. Check it out.
