Elder Zachary Wright's Mission Site

Fallout from Kenya unrest, updates, reactivation, choosing the better part.

Date: January 07, 2008
Area: Nsambya
Companion: Elder Mabaso

Today we've been everywhere looking for a place to e-mail. It's a good thing we're in town and we have many to choose from. The power is out almost everywhere right now. Usually that's not a problem because all the internet cafes have generators. But because of the extreme political turmoil in Kenya, there aren't any gas trucks crossing the border to bring us gas. That means the price of gas is ridiculously high. Someone did the conversion and figured it to be somewhere around $10-12 a gallon. So no one has generators working. But at least the traffic in town has decreased. Just be happy I'm not serving in Kenya right now. One of the Elders in the zone, Elder Wambui, called and asked if he could call home to make sure everyone in his family was alright. So of course we got permission for him immediately. And everything is alright.

Thanks for all the updates. Sometimes I take them for granted, but I really do appreciate having an idea as to what's going on at home. It would be a little overwhelming to come home and find all those things out. So it's good that we're able to communicate the way we do. Whether two years is a long time or a short time, the fact is a lot can change in that interval.

We found a lady here in Nsambya in the area called Kirombe that was baptized back in 1992 I think. But she was baptized in London. They're pretty wealthy. Meaning they have a car, a laptop, TV, DVD player, etc. But she has forgotten everything! When she put our name into her phone, instead of putting "Elders", she put "Elderly." Close enough I thought. Then she offered us tea and coffee. So we're starting at the beginning again. Her husband is a busy man and hard to get through to. But the best is her first born son named Hagard. He's 13. He's the one who really wants to listen to us and come to church. So we started to focus on him, and we took him to seminary on Thursday. Then all the sudden the parents were more receptive to us. A lot like the story of Ammon, King Lamoni, and King Lamoni's father. But it was nice when they came to church on Sunday. Except for the father. He had a meeting. But on his way to the meeting he hit a person with his car and apparently that person might be dead...

Overall Nsambya is doing very well. When I first came the numbers were terrible, but they've picked up big time. I've noticed lately that when we go to people’s houses, they are more like Martha and not Mary. It can be very annoying. I try my best to help them realize that it's probably more important for them to listen to the message instead making sure we're comfortable. Besides, their idea of comfort is a bit different from mine.

Have a great week!

Zac
