Training leaders, artist found

Date: May 19, 2008
Area: Kololo
Companion: Elder Ray

We just had our zone conference yesterday. It went pretty good. Elder Ray and I gave training. Since we're "leadership trainers" we tried to apply it to our assignment, which is to make the missionaries better leaders. We started off by trying to understand whether or not it's a righteous desire to be leader. It's a bit of an opinionated subject, but I think we did rather well in leading them into the answer, "Yes." The power scripture was 1 Timothy 3:1. Then we went into the first step that makes someone into a good leader. And that's being a good follower. So we went deep into that, talking all about sustaining. Then we said that if missionaries can't sustain their leaders on mission, then they won't sustain their leaders when the go home. For example, if they don't sustain their district leader, they won't sustain their Bishop. We then read Alma 34:34 after we did a bit of an object lesson by having all the leaders be sustained by the uplifted hand, zone by zone. It was actually a very difficult training to give, because most of it felt opinionated. There were some expected controversial comments made by expected Elders, but at the end of the conference I had never been complimented more on a training. And we'll be doing it again next week when we go to the zone conference in Ethiopia.

After zone conference we had to drive the Nsambya Elders very quickly back to their branch for the baptismal service of Oyet Nicholas, another nephew of Keny Armstrong. He was baptized by Ochan John, the other nephew of Keny Armstrong. Even one of Keny's daughter's gave a talk at the service. So it was very nice to go back and be a part of that.

I finally found out where that artist lives that I want to do that picture for me. I had to have an Elder who already went home e-mail me. He made a map on his computer and sent it to me. So I'll go and check him on Monday to try and figure out the prices. The next tricky part is trying to get it shipped home in one piece. I assume the artist himself will have a pretty good idea.

Have a good week.
